'Going Back, Giving Back' is back!
Presenter Aled Jones explore's the personal histories of amazing people who have dealt with tough times to see how they can positively change the lives of other amazing people affected by similar issues...
Aled Jones travels to the Yorkshire Dales to meet one of the original “Calendar Girls”. Angela Knowles (formerly Baker) lost her husband John to blood cancer in 1998. This inspired the making of an alternative WI Calendar.
Aled takes Angela on a journey to relive the time in the late 90s where she, and a group of 10 middle aged women took their clothes off to pose for a nude calendar to raise money for charity. They revisit the Dales Museum which John helped to set up and Angela has an emotional reunion with one of his former colleagues. They then travel to the village that became the setting of the blockbuster hit “Calendar Girls”. Remembering this incredible time of both loss and acheivement is motivating Angela to help someone who is newly widowed. We introduce her to Katie Moore who tragically lost her husband Tom to leukaemia at the age of 35. She now raises their 5 year old son Archie alone.
The two women get on incredibly well, finding all sorts of similarities between their two stories. After the meeting Angela decides she’d like to help Katie, and surprises her on the West End stage of the Calendar Girls musical “The Girls” where she is presented with a gift of a lifetime.
Aled Jones meets Rob (30) and Paul Forkan (28), two brothers who were tragically orphaned by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The boys, who were in their late teens at the time, tell Aled their incredible story of survival, revisiting places dear to them when they came home from the tragedy. In the last 5 years the brothers have managed to set up a successful clothing brand and run a charitable foundation helping under privileged children abroad, but now they want to help someone closer to home.
We introduce them to brothers Sam (14) and Jordan Walker (17). Just 9 months ago they lost their mother and younger brother when they were swept out to sea in unseasonably choppy waters off the Aberdeen seafront. The parallels between the two sets of brothers are extraordinary. Both suffered tragic loss to the power of the sea, at almost exactly the same age. The boys get on extremely well, the younger ones are able to open up to the older brothers and a remarkable conversation takes place. This spurs the Forkans on to want to help the Walkers. They surprise them with a life changing gift and ongoing support.
Aled meets Trevor Edwards, a man who flew fast jets in the RAF against all the odds. He grew up on the deprived Thamesmead estate in the 70s. With a passion for aviation, Trevor thought becoming a pilot was beyond his reach and only for “tall, Caucasian, publicly school educated, hyper intelligent” men. Trevor did well at school, and won a place at university where he came across the RAF. He failed a key test to become a pilot but was offered a place as a ground officer in the Air Force. On a training exercise tragedy struck. Trevor had to have his toes amputated after contracting trench foot. Whilst learning to walk again at the rehab centre Headley Court, believing his military career was over, Trevor met a Wing Commander (whose name he can’t remember) who inspired him to try again to become a pilot. This conversation 30 years ago changed Trevor’s life. Aled and the team have tracked the Wing Commander down and reunites Trevor with him. After this incredible surprise Aled then takes Trevor up in a plane to RAF Cosford where he reunites him with the aircraft that meant so much to Trevor, the Jaguar jet.
This journey motivates Trevor to want to help someone else, someone who has also suffered a disabling accident and who is facing military discharge. He is introduced to Paul Stevens, a soldier in the army who shattered his pelvis on a training exercise. Trevor learns Paul is passionate about flying and has had a couple of lessons funded by a charity. Throughout the meeting Paul thinks he is just taking part in a programme about life after the army, he has no idea he could be in line for a life changing gift which Trevor presents him with at the end of the programme.
Aled Jones travels to County Tyrone in Northern Ireland to meet a father and daughter who suffered heart breaking loss in the Omagh bomb. On 15th August 1998, Aiden Gallagher, a loving son and brother was tragically killed when the Real IRA detonated the blast on Market Street in the centre of the town. Aled takes father Michael and sister Cat Gallagher back to the fateful day, retracing the steps of the family. They return to the family business, a garage, which Michael used to run with Aiden. Cat has not been back since he died, and finds the visit very emotional, especially as hanging inside is the coat Aiden used to wear. Kept by the new owners of the business, in memory of the young man.
The family continue their journey, returning to the site of the blast and to the library where letters and tributes sent from all over the world have been treasured by the community. Remembering Aiden, and revisiting the day has spurred Michael and Cat to want to help someone affected by a more recent tragedy. We introduce them to Millie Twells, a 17 year old student living in Ilkeston in Derbyshire. She tells Cat and Michael how she survived a terror attack on a beach resort in Sousse in Tunisia two years ago. Millie now suffers severe post-traumatic stress and survivors guilt. Cat and Michael understand exactly what she is going through. Unbeknownst to Millie, who thinks she is just recording an interview about her experience in Tunisia, the Gallaghers are wondering if they can help her.
A week after the interview the Gallaghers and Aled make an unexpected visit to her school and interrupt a lesson to present her with a life changing gift.
Aled travels back to August 2011, to London in the middle of the riots. He meets Trevor Reeves, one of the owners of a 150 year old furniture shop that was destroyed in the trouble. Trevor relives the terrible night, describing how he witnessed his family’s livelihood burn down in front of him. They then go on a journey where Trevor learns an incredible secret about his Great Great Grandfather who founded the store. Remembering the night and the support he reveived from the local community is spurring Trevor to want to give back.
He is introduced to Fatima Koroma, a remarkable woman who has done so much to help the people of Croydon. After the riots she was out sweeping the streets, helping with the clean up and has gone on to run a foodbank providing food for people most in need. Trevor meets her and discovers how she always puts the community and others first, and is keen to help. In a surprise reveal at the end he presents her with a generous gift.
